American computer manufacturer HP yesterday launched a set of bundled network products in Jamaica that it says will slash start-up costs up to 65 per cent.

The cost saving to consumers is due to the US$2.7 billion ($232 billion) acquisition of networking firm 3Com this year, which resulted in efficiencies from the integration of products.

"With the acquisition of 3Com, the new HP Networking portfolio ...provide(s) an advanced network fabric that is up to twice as fast with half the energy use and at a 65 per cent lower total cost of ownership," claimed HP in a release accompanying its press conference yesterday at the recently rebranded Wyndham Hotel in Kingston.

HP is most known for its personal computers but also sells printers, software, services and IT infrastructure.

The company offers four tiered solutions titled A, E,V and S series. The acquisition presents the latest in a global race to renew and innovate technologies. In April this year, HP completed its acquisition of 3Com Corporation. HP said it would integrate 3Com's network switching, routing and security solutions with its existing HP ProCurve solutions, creating a comprehensive portfolio for customers.

A network switch provides connectivity between computers on a network. A router connects networks built on different platforms or languages and enables them to communicate.

HP argued that with its global reach, the expanded portfolio would solidify its "converged infrastructure strategy", which is built on the integration of servers, storage, networking, management, facilities and services. "With this integration, customers will be able to simplify their networks, deploy an edge-to-core network fabric for the enterprise and improve IT service delivery capabilities," it stated on its website.

Daryl Vaz, the minister without portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister who has responsibility for information, told Parliament yesterday that the move will save the country hundreds of millions of dollars.

"Currently, the telephone bills for Government are approximately $2 billion per year. Sixty per cent of the Government's telephony costs are made to itself," Vaz said.

Danville Walker, the chairman of the Central Information Tech-nology Office board, which has been charged with the imple-mentation, told The Gleaner last night that he hoped the ICT platform would be gradually installed.

Walker also said that when fully implemented, it could save taxpayers up to 60 per cent of current telephone cost.
